Fire Station flooring installation

Kemtile has successfully completed its 12th fire station appliance bay floor refurbishment for a major fire service provider, further strengthening its reputation as a specialist provider of heavy-duty industrial flooring solutions for emergency service facilities.

The existing appliance bay floor was a 20-year-old tiled installation that had deteriorated over time due to the demanding operational environment.

The floor was required to withstand:

  1. Fire appliances weighing up to 30 tonnes
  2. Frequent vehicle movements
  3. Dynamic loading and braking forces
  4. Continuous operational use with minimal downtime

Solving recurring failures

Previous repair works had been carried out using an MMA screed system, which had simply been overlaid onto the existing tiled floor. While this provided a short-term solution, the repairs quickly failed under the extreme loads and constant movement of fire appliances.

The recurring failures were creating maintenance costs and disruption for station operations, highlighting the need for a robust, long-term solution.

Kemtile are experienced suppliers of fire station flooring

Drawing on experience gained from numerous fire station refurbishment projects over the past eight years, Kemtile carried out a comprehensive site survey to assess the condition of the existing floor and identify the causes of previous failures.

The specification was carefully engineered to deliver:

  • Exceptional load-bearing performance
  • Resistance to heavy vehicle traffic
  • Long-term durability under constant operational demands
  • Reduced maintenance requirements
Improved lifecycle value for the client

Dave Sleight, Key Account Manager at Kemtile, who has led on the extensive refurb programme, commented:

“Our fire station flooring specification has now been installed across 12 stations and continues to demonstrate outstanding performance. Floors completed up to eight years ago remain in excellent condition and continue to perform as intended despite the daily demands of frontline emergency service operations.

“This success is the result of close collaboration between our project delivery and technical teams, who have refined the specification through real-world experience and continuous performance monitoring.”

He added: “By investing in a correctly designed and installed flooring system, fire and rescue services can avoid the cycle of repeated patch repairs and associated costs.

“The result is not only a safer and more reliable operational environment, but also significant long-term cost savings through the elimination of recurring maintenance and short-term repair solutions.

Watch Commander for the station said:

“On behalf of the crew, we just wanted to send an acknowledgement of appreciation of the work Kemtile have carried out in refurbishing the appliance bay floor. Of all the workmen we have come across through the fire service this team stood out significantly.”
