Kemtile, a division of world-leading flooring manufacture and install business Stonhard, has delivered a heavy-duty resin lining system for a multinational consumer goods company based in the North West of England.

The client had constructed a containment bund that was storing hypochlorous acid and needed a lining system that would protect the concrete and structure from spills during normal processes, or in the event of a full bund failure.

Corrosive environments often require solutions for a variety of obstacles using a single system. A well-designed lining must address two critical factors — chemical exposure and the physical demands of the application

Kemtile recommended the use of Stonchem 856, a vinyl ester resin lining system. This was applied at a thickness of 2.5mm to the bund floor, with Stonchem 855 used on the walls, and Stonchem 700/800 primer and Stonclad UR specified for fillets and coving.

The resin, engineering fabric, mortar coat, and mineral composite topcoat sequencing provides a smooth, heavy-duty chemical barrier, which is resistant to small static cracks and moderate thermal shock.

In fact it has excellent resistance to a broad base of chemicals, including strong organic acids, alkalis, solvents and moderate to strong inorganic acids.

George Morton from Kemtile said it was important to specify and install systems that are tailored to specific chemicals and requirements.

He commented: “It is a specialist highly durable solution to satisfy rigorous health and safety standards associated with the handling and storage of these type of chemicals.

“We had been to the site before and were familiar with its challenges.  We brought the same quality, workmanship and service to this next phase of work and completed the job in two weeks, keeping factory downtime to a minimum.”
